Obituary of Dale Hess

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dale Ross Hess, who peacefully left us at St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville, Ontario, on January 8, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 5, 1944, in Cornwall, Ontario, Dale’s life was filled with love, devotion, and a true sense of community.

Dale was the loving husband of Yvonne (Cassell) for 57 years. Together, they built a strong and supportive family, raising daughter Jennifer (Randy Croke) of Whitby and son Marc (Melissa Riley) of Barrhaven. Dale was also a proud Opa to Sarah, Adam, and Lia, who brought immense joy to his life. He was the proud patriarch of his family, always there with a word of wisdom, a laugh, or a helping hand.

Born to the late Gerald and Betty (Robertson) Hess of Morrisburg, Dale will be fondly remembered by his siblings: sister Lynda (Robert) Mongeon of Ottawa, brothers Gary (Maureen) Hess of Charleston, S.C., and Lee (Angela) Hess of Morrisburg, and his sister-in-law Louise Cassell of Mariatown. He will also be missed by his niece, nephews, and extended family.

A graduate of Morrisburg High School and the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology (EOIT) in Ottawa, Dale spent his entire working career in Brockville, where he became a respected and valued member of the community. His professional journey included work with Automatic Electric, J.A. Johnson Shoes, and Canarm, where he dedicated 37 years of service before retiring. His commitment to his work and community was unwavering.

Outside of his career, Dale was passionate about golf, and could often be found on the first tee at Highland Golf Course early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. He loved the game, but more than that, he treasured the friendships and camaraderie that came with it, enjoying lively conversations both before and after his rounds.

Dale also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. Whether it was gardening, fishing, or simply spending quiet moments by the St. Lawrence River, he found peace and contentment in nature. Time spent with family and friends was always special to him, and he was known for his kindness, generosity, and the warmth he brought to any gathering.

Dale’s presence in our lives was a gift—one that we will continue to cherish. His love for his family, his gentle spirit, and his joy for life will remain with us forever.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 28, 2025 at St Lawrence Anglican Church in Brockville at 1 pm.  The family will be receiving well wishes and visits from noon-1pm prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dale’s memory may be made to the St. Lawrence Lodge Foundation or St. Lawrence Anglican Church.

Rest in peace, Dale. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you.
