Saddened by this news, condolences to the Billings families. One of my Dad's favorite teammates at St. Lawrence. As dad told me several years back, "such a great athlete, loved to play hard"
Cherish the memories and the comments from those who knew Doug well, and hopefully there is a grid iron in the sky for these two old pals to reminisce. T. Racine Cornwall, On

My heartfelt condolences are extended to the Billing family. May you experience comfort and a sense of pride in the many memories that Doug brought to all who knew him. Personally, Doug enhanced the high school years significantly. Whether it be through coaching basketball, football or as a gym teacher Doug made high school fun and quite entertaining. I always looked forward to any activities under "coach's" tutelage. Doug will be sadly missed but always remembered.

Memories! No shortage of that. Linda brought their newborn son ( Shawn I believe) into our basketball practice. Proud dad was taking in all the attention. Then, when the flurry calmed down, Doug looked proudly at the infant and said, "Look at his hands look at his hands!! Gunna be a ball player, gunna be a ball player!"
A practise scrimmage of mens's and ladies basketball teams began with Coach identifying our team as the "shirts", and the ladies team as "skins". ( in those days, one team of an all male practise removed their tea shirts for easy identification). That caused a giggle from most participants, though I think that there might be some discussion now!
A school reunion was created a number of years ago. Doug asked me why I was not looking very happy. I replied that I just lost $10.00 cause I bet (Bob) Wade that (Terry) Bowerman would not show up. I can't remember coach's exact response, but it was hillarious (something like I would have made that bet too!
Years after both of our retirements, I drove in behind coach's car and home, several days before Christmas. He ambled towards my vehicle, and I called out my window, "Have you got any rum in the house? He yelled back, Is the Pope Catholic? Get the Hell in here!". The years just fell away.
Deepest sympathy to Doug's family. As they all know, Coach was one of the Good Guys. He touched so many along his road, and created many lasting memories.

To the Billing Family,
I am so saddened to read of Doug's passing. He was a great encouragement to me during my high school years (1965-1970) and spent many hours in his company with the basketball and football teams and the BAA (lots of laughs and stories to tell). Enjoyed times with him at his home as Linda was a great cook. We saw each other a few times over the years and we last communicated in 2015 after Linda's passing. In Doug's typical fashion after I expressed my condolences - he sent ME a note of encouragement. He had a great impact on a fellow who did not have much athletic ability giving me an opportunity to be part of the teams. Many will have fond memories of this special man. My sincerest condolences and prayers for your family.

This breaks my heart! Mr. Billing's, as an adult he said to call him Doug, but it still felt funny. I was lucky to have him as my Guidance Counsellor but also to work with him from 9-13 when I attended TISS. He was one of my favorites and sure made my high school days much more tolerable. Deepest condolences to all of your family! Fly high bud, dance across those clouds with your Linda and shine high... you will be missed by many!
