Mr. Sheppard was my English teacher at TISS, and was also my favourite teacher. I always loved reading and could tear through a book. Mr. Sheppard told me to slow down and savour the characters. He had me read different genres to expand my knowledge and was always kind and thoughtful. There was a girl in my class that just did not fit in with the rest of us, after class one day, Mr. Sheppard spoke to me about becoming her friend, to help her. I didn't want to, but he assured me it was the right thing to do, to rise up. I did it then and was rewarded with a friendship that lasted many years. Today that lesson has stuck with me. I befriend anyone I can, I join people together, and I serve in my workplace as a leader in employee resource groups, promoting immigrants, women and indigenous peoples. Mr. Sheppard did that for me! He gave me a great gift that I am sure he never knew he did! Thank you!!! I am also the daughter of one of Mr. Sheppard's former colleagues, Bill Robertson, Auto Shop teacher at TISS. My dad passed in 2009, but he respected Paul immensely and they would often talk in the hallways at TISS. May you all find comfort in the amazing memories of a beautiful soul! Dear Joan and family,
Mary and I were honoured and privileged to tour the Holy Land with you, Paul and other pilgrims a few years ago. We fondly recall Paul's abiding faith, his love of singing and his vast knowledge. We especially remember how he doted on you when you broke your ankle on the last day of the trip and had to delay your return.
Blessings,
Paul and Mary Muller, Burlington

Dear Joan,
It is with shock and heartfelt sadness that we have learned of your loss. Please accepted our deepest condolences.
I was fortunate to have had Mr. Sheppard as teacher/advisor while taking English and History adult classes at TISS in the mid-1990s while my husband Robert and I resided at Brockville. It is thanks to Paul that I have had the confidence and knowledge to follow my lifelong dream of researching and writing historical books; I have accomplished four successfully; the most recent was last year with a copy at The Ottawa Public Library. Always a professional and educator, Paul offered much appreciated advice and guidance with my first two books; his opinions were valuable and much appreciated. I still have my original handwritten essays with his suggestions, insights, and encouragement written in the columns. I will continue to cherish his words of wisdom; he will not be forgotten.
My husband and I extend our condolences to your entire family as you celebrate your Paul's life and great accomplishments. May you find comfort in knowing that we care about the sorrow you feel.
With heartfelt sympathy and caring..

Paul was a special friend of mine during our teaching days together at TISS and in our retirement. I would sometimes walk to school with Paul and I remember panting as I tried to keep up to him, both of us talking as fast as we were walking. We had wonderful conversations through the years and I will miss him. He was a true gentleman in every way.

Dear Joan and family,
I was very saddened to hear this morning of the passing of my old friend, your beloved husband and father, Paul. I am one of the dwindling few who will remember him from our days together at Barrie Central Collegiate in the late fifties. We took many classes together and sang in the school's Glee Club. He was a good friend, a renaissance man, a gentleman and a scholar. I remember him for his quick wit, the breadth and depth of his knowledge, the deep catholicity of the faith (both small and large "C") that sustained and motivated him throughout his life, his love of family and friends and his sense of citizenship which encompassed many good and just causes. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
RIP, Paul. my friend.

Mr. Sheppard taught my mom, my dad, me, and my sister. I always enjoyed his class. I remember him walking with his lunch pail to school every day. And when he retired he still walked. And if we ran into him he still knew who I was even after teaching so many kids. Rest easy Mr. Sheppard.

I was so deeply saddened to hear that Mr. Sheppard had passed. When I was 15 years old, I had the great pleasure of accompanying him and Eric on an incredible nine-day bicycling trip from Brockville to Fredericton, NB. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip during which we made unforgettable memories.
He was a wonderful man, and I know that he will be missed by a great many people.
My most sincere condolences to the entire Sheppard family.

I am so sorry to hear about Paul's passing. He was a dear and supportive friend to my father, Charlie. They met in Barrie as children and re-united many years later as adults. They went on to have many adventures together over the years, including cross-country skiing and recently a once in a lifetime trip to Israel. Paul will be greatly missed by our family but we are forever thankful for the many years of joy and true friendship he shared with my dad.
