Hunter and Betty Grant pledge to make a donation in Richard’s memory to The Brockville General Hospital Foundation.
Sarah Jane, our deepest sympathies on learning of Richard’s passing.
He was a special human being, filled with kindness, generosity, plus a deep concern for the community of Maitland in which he lived for so much of his life,
His involvement in so many causes evidenced his willingness to serve, and the awards bestowed upon him over his 90 years reflect the scope and magnitude of his selflessness.
He was my Sunday school teacher when we moved to Maitland in 1950, and we remained friends up until the end. We have many happy memories of time spent together.
Please convey our condolences to your children and grandchildren.
Maitland has lost its quiet leader. The greater community has lost a generous contributor of time and financial support, and we have lost a friend.
May he Rest In Peace.
Hunter and Betty Grant,
Rockport, Ontario

Our paths crossed with Richard's in 1985 when our family arrived in Brockville. We purchased some antiques, a set of drawers, and (more prosaic) a clothes dryer from his business. What a golden happening to meet Richard, and in addition to his commerce, began a series of conversations respecting the history of Leeds & Grenville which I admit were quite useful as the local judge in the county with the courthouse in Brockville. Richard was a true gentleman, whether in volunteer work the St John Ambulance or other of the many local organizations that came to rely on him. He will be greatly missed.

So I cold-called Richard soon after buying the property in 2016 and reading the book he wrote "Maitland A Very Neat Village Indeed". He said all he knew was in that book...well... that wasn't even close... I think he was trying to blow off this guy from Toronto. But after I started working on the tower when the stones were falling in, he saw my heart was in the right place and we quickly became good friends, and talked about all kinds of things, all the mysteries that were still to be discovered there. Richard had an amazingly vivid memory of everything, from decades ago, not just facts but wonderful stories that brought Maitland to life for me, including the time he lay on the grass on the Point with Peter Webster just after Sputnik was launched in 1957, enthusiastically showing Mr. Webster this first orbiting satellite as it flew overhead like a moving star in the night sky. It was like being there - that happened 64 years ago! I already miss him so much. RIP Richard - you will live on in all those you have touched and in Maitland itself - our quest continues... your friend Philip

We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Dumbrille. He was a friend to us and our project, a great source of encouragement, and a wealth of knowledge on the history of the area and the Maitland Tower site.
The pictures below are of Richard and Philip Ling, our owner, who took Richard on a tour up the Maitland Tower in October of 2018 while we had the scaffolding up for the restoration work. It was a wonderful experience for us to have Richard share stories of the generations of Dumbrilles who had lived and worked in the area, along with the Websters and others. It was also very special for us to be able to give him the opportunity of taking in the view 73 feet in the air of the place he had lived in and was so devoted to his whole life. He told us the tour was a thrill for him - he was so excited that he refused to sit in the chair we arranged to have at the top for a rest, determined to soak in every minute of the view.
We know he was heartened by our work to restore the tower and chart house, and contribute to the historical preservation of the area.
Our hearts are with his wife Sarah Jane and his whole family. He will be missed. All of us at the Maitland Tower
