Obituary
Obituary of Paul Boushy
Entered peacefully into rest with his family by his side on August 20, 2021 at age 85. Paul leaves his beloved and devoted wife of 57 years, Susan (nee Farkouh), and his three cherished children: Peter (Leona) of Hamilton, Ontario; Andrew (Carolin), of Oakville, Ontario; and Lisa (Robert) of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. “Jiddo” also leaves behind his seven adoring grandchildren: Christopher, Michael, Declan, Nadia, Eamon, Sebastian and Vivienne.
Paul will be fondly remembered by his brothers, Dr. Samuel Boushy (the late Dr Luceil Boushy), and David Boushy (Leila), and his many loving nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers Rev. Theodore Boushy, Salam Boushy, Kamel Boushy, Rev. Nadeem Boushy and sisters Jamile Boushy, Camilla Nasrallah, Yvonne Aboud and Lydia Farrah.
As the youngest of eleven children, Paul (“Boulos”) Boushy was born in Kfarmishki, Lebanon, a small Christian mountain village located 50 km from Beirut. Known for its unique oak trees and ancient temples, Paul grew up on an olive farm and enjoyed an idyllic childhood before immigrating to Canada in 1955 at the tender age of 17.
Soon after, he began studies at Western University in London, Ontario, later working at an accounting firm before switching careers to retrain as a rehabilitation counsellor. He began working at the Sudbury Algoma Sanitorium in 1963 and it was during this time that he met Susan by chance in Elliot Lake, also a recent immigrant from Beirut, Lebanon. They quickly fell in love and married on September 19, 1964, and Peter was born the following year.
In 1967 Paul seized a new exciting job opportunity to work at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital as a supervisor in its growing rehabilitation department. The family of three settled into Brockville, and Andrew and Lisa were born soon after.
Paul’s admirable career in mental health spanned 37 years before his retirement in 1995. During those years, he was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club, and served as a different type of councillor — for The City of Brockville Council — where he helped initiate new policies and programs for the municipality and advocate for various causes that affected the community at the time. He and Susan were also active members of the Wall Street United Church.
Kind and gentle with a wonderful sense of humour, Paul loved the simple pleasures of everyday life. He was a true family man who took great pride as the family “counsellor,” too, putting the happiness of others first and always striving to bring people together. In work as in life, it was a role that came naturally to him. Paul was a special soul that brought joy to all those around him and will be dearly missed.
Many thanks to the nurses and PSWs at the St. Lawrence Lodge for their wonderful care. In memory of Paul, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Lanark Leeds Grenville and the Wall Street United Church would be gratefully appreciated by the family.
