Aunt Donelda, Lynn, Bob, Doug, Ed, Mark and families:
We were so sad to hear of Uncle Gerald's passing and also very disappointed that we are unable to make it to the funeral - however, we certainly wanted to pass on our condolences!!. Uncle Gerald was such an important part of my (Dan's) life - at every holiday and family celebration. When I think of Uncle Gerald I think of the never-ending smile, constant jokes, carrots, and his quirky way of looking at life. I also can't think of Uncle Gerald without thinking of you Aunt Donelda - because you were his constant companion......and Lynn, Bob, Doug, Ed and Mark; there was never a conversation with Uncle Gerald where one (or all) of you weren't lovingly brought into the conversation. He clearly loved you all and I know you (and we) are so much better off for having him in our lives.
All our love, Dan, Shelley, Gabby and Kevin, Jarrod and Caitlyn and Nano.

Hi Dad
During our busy lives we never contemplate this moment. The finality of it all. On Thursday night I was playing with Angelina and Bella on the couch at home, when mom called. I'm my father's son and I'll remember this on the days when I'm feeling lonely with out you here Dad. Mom in her usual way would talk with me and the girls, then I could hear her ask dad "do you want to talk with your son?" I always wondered, what if he said no? That was the way that my parents married for 64 years, communicated. I've known for many years how much my father and mother loved each other. I remember when my mother was having surgery and my dad reassured me that she was going to be okay. His voice wavered and his eyes watered up, that's the moment that I truly understood the love that one person can have for another.
My wife Hanh also reminded me how kind and considerate Gerry was to her when she first arrived in Canada from Vietnam, after we were newly married. The day that Brother Bob phoned me to tell me that dad had died and I told Hanh. She told me how much she loved Gerry and that he lived a good life but that he was getting older and he needed a rest. That I needed to let him go. Which I'm struggling with right now. I know she's correct but Gerry was also my dad for 58 years, who I'll miss dearly. When I first shared with my mom and dad that I was traveling to Vietnam to get married with Hanh, my mother Donelda was shocked. My dad wanted to know more about my plans. My father never jumped to any conclusions.
When Hanh and I were expecting Bella a first child, Dad smiled and told me that "they will keep you young" Dad your right about that. I appreciate that you were with us long enough to meet Hanh my wife and spend some time with Bella and Angelina your grandchildren. Dad you'll always be Poppy Gerry to both of them.
Dad my promise to you is that I'll try to be a great dad to my children and a good husband to my wife Hanh. The way you exemplified this to your children, in your actions, not merely words.
Dad, thank - you for the sacrifices you made for your family, working those many years in Phillips Cables. I remember picking you up in the evening from the 4 - 12 shift and smelling the strong odour on your clothing, from the factory inside. You remembered us, by leaving chocolate bars in your metal lunch box. So we would find them and enjoy a treat. Thank - you dad.
Thank you to Uncle Cliff and Aunt Lilian's family for being part of the Shackles' families lives, from the beginning. When ever we meet I feel the Christian love, that 's been shared over the years between our families. Having Christmas dinner in your basement was hectic but the absolute best memories, to have of Christmas. Or ringing the school bells at our home early Christmas morning and waking up mom, dad and some of my other siblings who were sleeping in.
Thank you to all of my family for dropping by and keeping and eye on Mom and Dad. I may not ever say it but I love you all. Bob and Doug modifying mom and dad's house to make it easier for them to live in. Bob, thanks for getting dad involved in music and the arts. I know that encouraging dad to pursue some other interests, wasn't easy.
A special thanks to Bob and Sylvia for always stepping up to the plate and planning the last birthday party that we had for dad, this past summer. You don't know when your celebrating some ones special day, that it may be their last.
Dad, thanks for teaching us all, about unconditional love and generosity. So many people visiting at your wake last night and sharing stories about you with me, reminded me of this.
Dad, I'm not going to say good - bye because I'll be thinking about you a lot and sharing stories with Hanh, Bella and Angelina about you.
Dad, you can take a long deserved rest from your fatherly role and that of a great husband and provider. All of us will step in and keep an eye on Mom, for you.
I love you dad, you are a great role model and father to exemplify. I hope this message reaches you in heaven.
Edward Gerald Shackles

...Go through all photos Hanh found these photo when Bella was just little baby. Now she is 7 yrs and you have gone.Dad! Anyone can be a Father but it takes someone very special to be a Dad. You are great special Dad. Our children is very proud of you. Bella Angel told us that you are sleeping in heaven and watching over protecting those left behind you love. We sadly will not see you in person drinking Root beer and cashew as everytime you visited us. We will not see you teasing Angel by playing tissue around your noses. All nice memories have become our heartbeat as sometime your son still just cant believe you"re gone..we love you very much. Thanks for everything that you have done...Rest in peace, paradise dad

as the oldest and only daughter where do you start with the memories. dad was allways there for you when he was needed and sometimes when he wasn't. Hahah. but I guess the special memory for me was when rob and I got married and he walked me down the aisle. he kept counting the steps. I said take it slow as he held my arm and I will remember the last time we walked together and we held each other the same way.
love you dad

As a young boy I remember driving with my mother, brothers, and sister to Phillips cables after the 8 to 4 day shift. We would be hanging off the back of the front seat waiting for the big door to open as the punch clock struck 4pm. waiting for my dad to walk out amongst the crowd. Everyone has a special walk and we would sit in the back and say there's Dad as he swung his lunch box back and forth. We were always so excited to see my dad get in the car at the end of a long day. Dad usually had a chocolate bar in his lunch box and we would wait patiently for Dad to open his lunch box to see the surprise that he had for us. Sometimes it was a dime in an envelope from a refund from the vending machine. I will miss you Dad.
I love you.

My Dad
As a young boy, my dad was a super hero, as he could do really amazing things. He could lift me high over his head, drive a huge nail into a solid board, or fix a broken bicycle, first thing, when returning home after a night shift.
Things that he would pass along, over the years, to myself, my brothers, and my sister ( she's the oldest).
He was a jack of all trades, and a master of many. Dad shared his many skills with us, and always the first to lend a hand. Simple repairs, decks, rooms, and even entire homes. He was a carpenter, an electrician, a mechanic, and a top notch plumber, always adding a little bit of "fussy", to every task.
He always said... If you're going to do it, then do it right, a motto which dad applied to everything he did in life.
He was a loving, loyal, and caring husband.
A much loved poppy and great poppy
A true friend to many.
A helping hand to complete strangers.
The neighbor that many cherished.
That coworker that made long shifts pass with ease, as he could be quite an entertainer.
Most of all, though, he was a terrific dad. Thank you for all of your love and care, and all that you taught us.
He was not a big man, but he was a huge DAD.
Love you
Mark
