Obituary of Phyllis Dawn Akey
Early on October 15 2016 Phyllis Dawn Akey age 79, died at the Brockville General Hospital Charles Street Site. She was receiving treatment for what may have been a severe Crohn's attack. She had suffered with Crohn's for over 2 decades, countless stays in the hospital, it got so bad that in the last 8 years she received TPN for 12hrs a day. In the last 4 years her mobility was severely impaired by a much needed hip replacement, which her poor health prevented. She fought so hard for so long, never the one to let others know just how much pain she was in. Even on her last day when asked how she was doing, she'd say "I am feeling Ok".
Beloved wife of the late William "Bill" and adoring mother of the late Andrew "Andy". She is predeceased by siblings; Gordon, Roy, Sanford (Bob), Herbert & Jene. Phyllis is survived by her son Donald of Brockville. Siblings Ruth Blacklock (Fred), Callie Drane; and many nieces, nephews, and a collection of great and kind friends.
Cremation will take place with internment at a later day, in New Jerusalem NB (at camp Gagetown) with her Mom, Dad & Brother Jene.
In memory of Phyllis Akey donations to Crohn's & Colitis Canada or Restorative Care Program at BGH Garden St, Canadian Diabetes Association; or a charity of your choice, would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Phyllis met and fell in love with Bill while he was in the Royal Canadian Navy. For her love he transferred from the Navy to the Canadian Air Force, and with that came their first posting, Cold Lake AB. Phyllis got to live in and see this entire country and even Germany in the 70's. Phyllis's three passions were her family, cooking & gardening. Phyllis was a professionally trained Cook and Chef, with a real knack for baking. She made some of the most wonderfully tasting deserts, you cannot image. Her "Green" thumb was legendary, the variety of colors she coaxed from her African violets was astonishing, and she grew multi colored violets the likes of which will never see again. Her gardens and flower beds were bountiful and beautiful. I never saw her so happy after spending the entire day planting and caring for the front flower beds. After ready an article about Brockville being a great place to retire, they came for a visit and fell in love with the city and its people. After Phyllis and Bill retired to Brockville, Mom took up "Birding", she loved watching all the different birds that came to the backyard to feed. There was always a Mr. Red & Clara (Cardinals), Mr. Blue (Bluejay), and a "Little Mrs." (Robin). She longed for the return of the Robins in the spring & Humming birds in summer.
My mom always maintained a grace, conviction and determination that belied her demeanor. She was our foundation. In her quiet, selfless way, loved and accompanied each of us through the paths that life took us, always there, always supportive and always encouraging. She was unique in her relationships with each of us and loyal to our individualities, sometimes seeing our value when we ourselves may not. She rejoiced in our successes and commiserated in our losses. Although I may not told her enough, I loved her absolutely.
I would like to extend a special thank you to Chris Barnett, long-time family friend. Chris' visits brightened Moms day and helped Mom to continue to enjoy life with less restraint than her health in recent times would normally have allowed.
In the last few years Phyllis' world became filled with many Caregivers & Friends, that showed such love and compassion, they touched her life and she touched theirs…I thank you all.
