Stanley Walter Kenneth Westall (1927 - 2015) passed away peacefully in Brockville with his family October 3. Beloved husband of the late Patricia (deceased 2007.) Dearly loved father to Karen (Russell Cantlay), Warren (Kathy), Roger (Barry DeJong) and Gillian (Stephen Jackson.) Proud Grandfather of Chenoa, Chelsea, Christine, Gavin and Maia, and great grandfather of Jordan and Meyline. Stan also leaves behind his companion of seven years, Valerie Kines. Stan was the only child of Ivy Doris (Dot) & Walter Westall, born in Reading, UK . Growing up in Reading he started his newspaper career at the age of 14 with the Reading Mercury and the Berkshire Chronicle. He joined the Royal Naval Service during WWII where he met Patricia Hedley, a pupil in his shorthand class. They married in 1948. Stan & Pat emigrated to Canada in 1954, where he worked with the Globe & Mail in Toronto. The family moved to Ottawa in the early 1960's where Stan continued with the Globe & Mail, covering the affairs of parliament. He then started a new career with the Federal Civil Service working with External Affairs and CIDA, which took the family, including Pat's mother Alice, to Barbados for a five year posting. In 1980 they moved to Mallorytown when he was the editorial writer for the Brockville Recorder & Times, retiring in 1992. The Thousand Islands region offered Stan and Pat many wonderful years of sailing, gardening, reading and community service. He was involved with the Rockport Men's Breakfast Club, supported the renovation of the Springfield House in Escott and the La Rue Mills Cemetery. Stan's mother Ivy moved from England to live with the family during this time. In 2003, Stan and Pat moved to Brockville. They joined the local Tai Chi community and Stan continued his volunteer activities by reading to children at Prince of Wales school as well as researching archival materials for the Brockville museum. Stan later took up painting classes at St. Lawrence College and produced quite a few "masters" that were particularly reminiscent of the Group of Seven. A truly genuine individual who loved knowledge and language. A gentleman with a quick & astute sense of humour & honour, Stan will be missed by all those who loved and knew him. A Celebration of Life for Stan will take place November 7, 2015 at the Brockville Yacht Club, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to pay their respects to the family is welcome.
