While living in Vulcan AB. In 1957 my parents took in a boarder, he was a young man who had just arrived from the Netherland, his name was Matthijs Flickweert. Matt was employed as a printer at the Vulcan Advocate. He became part of our family and an older
Brother to me and my three sibling. He became a member of the Calgary Highlanders reserve unit, while I was in the Cadet Corp. I recently found some pictures of that period and have always wondered what became
of Matt. Marenus (Mitch) Wierenga, mitchwierenga@shaw.ca Victoria BC

Dear Joanna, Bill and family
I am very sorry to hear the passing of Matt, my sincere condolences to you and your family.
When you lose someone very precious, no one else can really know all that you feel.
I got to know Matt while he was working at the college, as the Athens Mural; reporting on all festivities in the Village of Lyn and the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley, and also as a masonic lodge member. Matt was a very hard and dedicated worker and a mason, he will be greatly missed.
Sorry I cannot be with you today, please know that many caring thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow.
Sincerely, Elizabethtown-Kitley Councillor Rob Smith, Lyn Masonic Lodge 416

Joanna and the Flikweert family - Matt was always a reporter that you could count on to write a fair story that reflected both sides of the issue. I always enjoyed our time together and the good questions that he would ask of me and my fellow UCDSB colleagues. My condolences on the loss of a true gentleman and a strong community advocate.

To Matt's family:
I was so very sorry to hear about Matt's passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know him when I was working in Athens and he was reporting for the Mural. One could always count on him to be very curious about his work, making sure he had all the details of the story and always presenting in a positive light. He had an infectious smile, a gentle manner and it was great to get to know this fine man. My sympathies on the loss of such a special man

Joanna, Bill & Janet:
I am saddened to hear of Matt's passing. Matt and I go back to 1962 when he, Gary Seaton and I joined the Brocks on the same night. I believe it was January 9, 1962. Matt and I walked home together that cold evening. We lived next to you on Apple Street, as you know, for a number of years. Matt and I enjoyed fun times together at Camp Petewawa where he and I, one time, got to drive an APC and a tank. I know he was very proud of his children and especially when Bill joined the Brockville Rifles.
I will always remember Matt's smile and his laugh. My deepest sympathy to you all.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Matt's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I first met Matt almost 30 years ago when we both worked at St. Lawrence College and I enjoyed our chance meetings after his retirement when I would bump into him, with his camera of course, at various locations all over eastern Ontario. He will be missed.

Dear Family
Our condolences with the passing of your husband and father. We understood from uncle Jan ( my father ) that the situation was realy bad and that recovery was not to be expected.
Nevertheless its hard to say goodbye to such a personality like Oom Thijs. Emptiness will be there in your houses but hopefully not in your harts.
We pray that God will strenghem you all, these days and the days to come.
God bless you all !!

To the members of Matt's family, I extend my sincere sympathy.
I was shocked to learn of Matt's untimely death. As a Mason in St. Lawrence District, I had many opportunities to be associated with Matt, especially during my term as District Deputy Grand Master in 2005-2006. Matt was always fun to be with and a fine gentleman with a deep interest in the events and happenings within the Masonic community of the District. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, but will always be remembered with fondness.

Dear Janet, Ron, the boys, and family - I'm so so sorry to learn of your dad's passing. I didn't see him very often, but when I did, he was always smiling. I think he was a kind and gentle man, and I know you will miss him dearly. Memories are treasures that we never can give away, so when you find yourself floundering, take a minute to think back to all of the good times, the laughter and the love. It will help.
Much love
